The army used these in NI IIRC there was a program on
the BBC in the late 70's or early 80's where they showed
one in use, the local cadet drill hall also has pipe ranges
under it, though they may not be using them now due to flooding
problems filling up the pit's...

I like the tyre tunnel idea, that would be simple and
you could put a .22 gallery range anywhere.  Getting
large diameter tyres can be tricky, but the bigger the
tyre the more movement you could have.
