NRA-ILA FAX ALERT
Vol. 7, No. 40
DOJ WITHHOLDS PROSECUTION NUMBERS --
WHAT ARE CLINTON-GORE-RENO HIDING?
The Clinton-Gore-Reno Justice Department is refusing to release data on
the enforcement of federal gun laws. The Transactional Records Access
Clearinghouse (TRAC) (which analyzed previously-released data showing
federal referrals of gun prosecutions declined 44% in the first seven
years of Clinton-Gore) has filed a suit against the Executive Office for
United States Attorneys (EOUSA) for its failure to comply with TRACs
Freedom Of Information Act (FOIA) requests to obtain the data for
analysis. Several years ago, the Administration signed legislation to
provide the public information on the federal governments activities,
claiming the Administration was "committed to ensuring the widest possible
disclosure of government documents," and that "our democratic principles
require that the American people be informed of the activities of their
government." Janet Reno had also echoed similar sentiments. In light of
the Administrations recent foot-dragging on TRACs request, it would
appear that, yet again, Clinton is reneging on a promise. Of course this
begs the question, what are they hiding from voters?
AT&T FEELS THE HEAT --
TRIES TO BACKTRACK
Last weeks lead story on AT&T requesting that an NRA infomercial be
pulled from its cable system in St. Louis generated an overwhelming
response from NRA members and gun owners. Many of you who contacted AT&T
probably received the companys stock response that noted in part,
"Contrary to inaccurate assertions publicized by interest groups, AT&T
Broadband didnt make any decision to limit or remove NRA advertising from
our systems." But AT&Ts Clinton-esque parsing of words cannot conceal the
action they took to silence NRA. GRTV, the agency that sold AT&T cable
its package of ads, which included the NRA infomercial, did in fact pull
the NRA ad, but GRTV noted this decision came as a direct result of
contact from AT&T. AT&Ts complaint to GRTV was based primarily on calls
from a single viewer -- a protest which, despite AT&Ts claims to the
contrary -- was still celebrated on the "Million Mom March" website as
recently as yesterday.
U.S. SUPREME COURT REJECTS
PETITION TO REVIEW NAVEGAR v. U.S.
As is normal procedure at the beginning of a new session, the U. S.
Supreme Court issued a list of cases it has rejected for review this term.
Among the thousand- plus cases rejected was Navegar v. US (No.99-1874).
The case involved a series of unsuccessful challenges to the 1994
Clinton-Gore so-called "assault weapon" ban brought by several
manufacturers and importers that were consolidated in this appeal. The
issues had to do with the limits of the ability of Congress to regulate
commerce rather than a direct Second Amendment challenge.
McCAIN-LAUTENBERG?
Readers of the FAX Alert are familiar with U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.)
teaming up with anti-gunner Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wisc.) to promote
so-called "campaign finance reform." This week, McCain filmed an ad in
support of Amendment 22 in Colorado -- a Lautenberg-style gun show ban
ballot initiative. The commercials are being financed with soft money from
Americans for Gun Safety -- a new national anti-gun group with chapters in
28 states, funded by billionaire Andrew J. McKelvey of Monster.com. NRA's
opposition to Amendment 22 is based in many of the same reasons that we
opposed the Lautenberg gun show language in the Senate, but we agree with
Senator McCain in opposing the larger Gore agenda of licensing, testing,
and photo-ID schemes. Anti-gunners no doubt also winced at McCain's
support of Right-to-Carry, which he voiced on ABC's "Good Morning America"
on Thursday.
REMINDER: MARK YOUR CALENDARS & TUNE IN
On Monday, Oct. 9, "ABC News" will air an hour-long special on NRA and its
efforts to mobilize gun owners for this years elections. The special is
scheduled to run at 8:00 p.m. EST -- prior to "Monday Night Football."
