It wasn't in the HO press release, but in the command
paper the Government says:

"The Government accepts the principle recording the
details of all firearms on the database [of certificate
holders and applicants] but would wish to consult
further wiht the police service and other interested
parties on the utility of such a system and how best
it might be carried forward."

If this nuttiness becomes part of the fees structure,
fees will go through the roof! Later on they say:

"The Government wishes to confirm that the set-up costs
of a national firearms certificate database will not be
recovered through any sort of levy on fees although
police use of the system once it is operable will be
reflected in the usual way when future fees are set."

"police use" would presumably include inputting the
details of every gun. As there are 1.7 million or
so held on certificate, imagine the costs! Hopefully
such a system would replace the local systems at some
point, but knowing how the HO does IT projects (very
badly) it would cost a fortune.

Steve.
