Three young police officers were praised for their bravery today after a
court heard how a car thief fired a gun at them at close range.

Christopher Heath, 18, of Croydon, Surrey, was jailed for five-and-a-half
years for using the imitation pistol to resist arrest and driving offences.

As he was lead from the dock at the Old Bailey, he told the officers: "I
will be out one day and you will all be dead."

The court was told that the theatrical replica, which was widely on sale in
Britain, was so realistic that Pcs Kevin Young, Neil Brown and Sarah McMullan
thought one of them had been shot.

Judge Peter Duckworth said the officers had been through an "appalling
experience".

He said Pc Young "must have thought his last days had come. I have enormous
sympathy for the police who have to deal with dangerous and potentially
lethal situations".

Outside court, Detective Constable Peter Quinn said: "The public can be
proud to have such high calibre officers protecting them on the streets."
