<<IG, are you able to say what kind/type/style of bullet you were
using? If all bullets were made the exact same way for every particular
caliber, then the only variables to worry about would be case shape and
capacity, and perhaps the barrel characteristics.
I ask that I might compare that particular bullet to others in
another caliber, having close ballistic characteristics>>
Details are as follows:
250 gr Hornady spire point. 73 grains reloader 22. Weatherby cases, CCI 200
primers.
This combination gave me 2680 fps. (Alliant charts give 2620)
With my zero at 200yards, drop at 300 is 10" and at 400 it is 32".
Rifle is a Tikka M690, 24" barrrel with 1in 10" twist.
Scope is a Leupold variable.
This combination shoots sub minute of angle right back to 700m, which is as
far as I have been able to test fire.
What I did find was a marked difference in elevation when I checked zero in
Africa. Rounds were 7" higher at 200m than at home.
I put this down to the fact that it's almost sea level where I zeroed, and
when in Africa we were at 4,000+ feet asl. Add to this the temperature being
42 in the shade and there is bound to be an increase in pressure. No signs
of excess pressure on the cases, but as the case is almost filled to
capacity with powder, it would be interesting to know what the increase is.
If anyone has any experience of high altitude and high temperature
performance, I would be interested in knowing. (OK, difference could well be
also due to airline baggage handling techniques).
