Paul, as in all comments there is good / bad
I must disagree with you cars legitimate reason AK47's don't. I used to use
similar weapon in UK for pract. rifle (I still use an AK47 in Norway). It
was a legit use then and the minute you/we single out one type of gun as
"not legit use" then we split the few shooters into bite size chunks for the
anti brigade.
Your thread seems to be similar to the "don't say anything" balls up that
followed Dunblaine. The stupid line from our shooting representatives. All
that did was to let an unchallenged position be set up in the press and in
the minds of the population that this nut, and the presumption that there
must be others as there X000,000's of guns out there, had no legitimate
reason for owning a gun.
The fallout from this is that we are all still thought of as being "fringe
society" people. Had we taken a positive line on this ie what we do,
target, pract, clays, IPSC, or whatever, then the public would see us in a
different light now.
Shooters are under fire from anti's who LIE, they do not care about the REAL
merits of our case, they just want us deleted. They use sound bites, be
they correct or lies (the US 12 to 19 kids a day shot killed). We have to
provide similar sound bites that can be handled by the press. Yes give them
the storey about YOUR shooting discipline, but that is tooooo long. They
need shorter focus points.
So what is wrong with "no crime in Texas" if its true?
We need more and more facts like that, so an overwhelming case is there for
Joe Bloggs (in the street) to understand. He does understand the
sub-culture of crime in this country [[cue for Neil F to enter fray]] and he
wants that not to effect his family as much as you or I do.
Give Joe Bloggs understandable data, week on week, he will eventually see
the logic, as indeed has Hague and Co. of shooting and the sports not being
the "evil" that it is portrayed as.

On a barely related point, anyone else thinking of going to the IPSC rifle
championships in Norway next year? Anyone got a clue what the rules are
yet? I see that they're thinking of 200m being the max. distance, which
sounds like practical pistol with a rifle to me. (Fine by me, let's see
'em outshoot a Sarony!)
Steve.
