Good to hear from Tom Charnock on airguns and airgunners
As he says, we've got to find a way of getting substantial
numbers of airgunners organised in a very short space of
time and to be honest, I sometimes think it's a bit of a lost
cause. Even within our own controlling bodies and
organisations we've still got guys who say that licensing
and/or registration of airguns would be 'a good thing' as
it would cut down on misuse! They regard me as a prophet of
doom up here, because I maintain that licensing/registration
is but a prelude to eventual banning and confiscation and that's
among the so-called informed and organised section of the sport!
God knows what the unattached airgun users know or think.
I'm trying through local retailers and personal contacts to raise
awareness of the issues among local airgunners and at the same
time trying to persuade our local firearms clubs that not everybody
with an airgun is a lunatic!
I've even applied for probationary membership of one of the local
shooting clubs to try and gain some experience in other shotting
disciplines and at the same time try to spread the word on using
airguns to promote and recruit into the sport. I may even end up
applying for an FAC (I may not have much choice if the HASC get
their way!) Anyway, we've got to try but I fear that unless
all sections of the sport wake up pretty smartly to the fact that
as far as the antis are concerned we are ALL shooters and All to
be eventually legislated out of our sport, the future is not a
bright one.
