I'm curious which people think is more dangerous: having tattooed
thugs voting on every matter or having scores of Jack Straws
deciding the matter between themselves. At least with the
tattooed thugs voting, many people would be aware of the
latent danger.

Representative democracy is probably the best idea mankind has
evolved so far but it's given us in the US a ruling class (I'm
speaking in the legislative sense here, not resorting to marxist
dogma) much like your vestigal aristocracy and it doesn't seem to have
done all that well for you in the UK, either.

Probably the crux of the matter is that we all need a clear
bill of rights that we can point to (which the UK doesn't
have, based on discussions on this list) and we need to
enforce the bill of rights like any other law: with severe
penalties for government entities who violate it (which is where
we in the US fall down).

Exactly, for representative democracy to work there has to
be a clear set of rules to follow, to stop kneejerk nonsense
that we see in this country all the time. The US Govt
may not follow the Bill of Rights all the time, but at least
you have a court system willing to enforce it.

Steve.
