Pensioner kills thief to save potatoes
FROM ALICE LAGNADO IN MOSCOW
VIGILANTE justice is alive and well in Russia, where a
pensioner who shot dead a thief trying to steal his potatoes
has been hailed as a hero.
Mikhail Melnikov, 67, became angry when he found two
men stealing the crop from his garden in the countryside near
the town of Balakhna, several hundred miles west of Moscow.
When Mr Melnikov shouted at the thieves to stop, one
took out a knife. The pensioner picked up his gun and shot
the thief dead.
In some countries the actions of Mr Melnikov might be
frowned upon, but this lone, elderly man, surviving on a
meagre pension supplemented only by allotment potatoes, has
become a star in the eyes of his neighbours. Nikolai Koznov,
the town's chief police officer, said: "We shall do everything
in order that he does not go to prison."
Russian television showed the fate of those who dare to
cross the paths of vegetable growers. One man was locked in a
metal cage. Another was filmed as he crouched on all fours,
attached to a dog kennel by a thick metal chain.
