An arsenal of weapons including a machine gun which can
fire 20 rounds a second have been seized by police.

Officers investigating a number of Yardie shootings
found the weapons along with six kilos of heroin with
a street value of L150,000.

More than 50 officers from Operation Trident, including
members of the Metropolitan Police's specialist firearms
unit, swooped on an address in Barnet, north London, at
3am yesterday.

Further raids during the morning and afternoon led to
four men and three women being arrested in connection
with suspected firearms and drugs offences.

Concealed in a black holdall in the boot of a car,
officers found a Mach 10 machine pistol with two loaded
magazines, three loaded magazines, three automatic
pistols and a smaller handgun with dumdum bullets.

At least 29 people were killed in Yardie related
"hits" last year.

Ten days ago, one man received serious chest wounds
and eight others were injured when a man fired shots
outside the Chicago nightclub in Peckham High
Street, south east London.

Detective Chief Superintendent David Cox, head of
Operation Trident, said: "This significant seizure
will undoubtedly disrupt the flow of drugs and the
use of illegal firearms on the streets of the capital.

"This morning's arrests show that the people involved
in this kind of criminal activity have access to some
high-powered weapons which they are prepared to use."

I love the headline - I know the police are trying to
recruit in ethnic minorities but since when were the
police Yardies.

The ~machine gun~ was an Ingram machine pistol and I
didn't think the cyclic rate was anything like 1200 rpm.
The other two shown on TV were semi-auto pistols, a
Hi-Power and something very like. They report didn't
mention that the popular concept of a Dum-Dum bullet
is any bullet designed to expand.
Don't the police use soft nosed bullets?

How come the plods manage to sieze three guns and get
it on the 6 o'clock BBC main news bulletin but some
poor sod gets shot in Great Yarmouth and it only
makes the local rag?

Methinks one makes good PR and the other doesn't.

Cynical? Moi?

I'm (thank God) not well up on these things but the
drugs siezure works out at 25 pounds a gramme - does
that sound right?

That's what I thought, I don't think six kilos of
heroin is worth L150,000. I know the stuff they
sell on the street is "cut" but even pure heroin
doesn't sell for L25 a gram, although "pure"
is a subjective term. More like ten quid for
a gram, so a street value of L60,000.

MAC-10s do have a cyclic rate around 1,200 rpm,
I think my blank-firing one is around 1,300 rpm
but it has a lighter bolt than a real one.

Steve.
