 By Sinead McIntyre, PA News

A teenager armed with a ball-bearing gun fired at a nursery
school's windows as terrified children and staff hid inside.

The boy, believed to be aged 14, was seen with what looked
like a handgun near a field where children from Bright Sparks
kindergarten in Bury, Greater Manchester, were playing.

Nina Johnson, manager of the premises which are also used
by older boys and girls during the summer holidays, said
the 36 children aged between six months and 10 years were
immediately taken inside the nursery and all the doors and
windows locked.

Ms Johnson said: "He began firing at the windows. It was
terrifying at first because when we first saw him in the
field it looked as if he had a handgun."

The boy fired at the nursery in Stewart Street on
Wednesday for around five minutes before running off.

"We closed all the curtains so the children wouldn't get
scared and tried to jolly them along really and I
immediately called the police," Ms Johnson said.

She added that the following day she saw some of the
boy's friends in the field and they told her he had been
using a ball-bearing gun.

His name has been passed to police.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said they
were called to the incident at around 4pm on Wednesday.

 An investigation is on-going.
