Police employ man who shot robber

By Elizabeth Judge (Times 25/8/2000)

A GUN shop assistant who shot dead an armed robber has been
made a firearms inspector, police disclosed last night.
Peter Lamb, 49, shot Colin Budd, 19, as he tried to steal
weapons from the Ward and Co Gun Shop in Colchester,
Essex, nine years ago.
Mr Lamb, a clay pigeon shooting expert, has now accepted a
L25,000 job as firearms inspector with Essex Police.
Mr Budd. who was wearing a crash helmet and ski mask, burst
into the shop on July 18, 1991. He believed that, he was about
to be arrested and had told friends he wanted weapons to
defend himself from police.
The teenager threatened Mr Lamb and Richard Ward, the store
manager, then forced a customer to lie on the floor and put
a gun to his stomach.
Mr Lamb pretended to look for the gun cabinet keys then
reached for a loaded .38 revolver kept in a cupboard behind
the counter and fired at Mr Budd. The bullet went through his
lungs and into his heart, killing him instantly. It was later
found that Mr Budds gun had no firing pin, one used cartridge
and blocked barrels.
Mr Lamb said that he had meant only to wound the teenager. He
was cleared by police and publicly forgiven by David Budd,
the victims father. Police revoked his firearms dealers
licence, however, for having a loaded pistol in his shop.
Dr Malcolm Weir, the Colchester Coroner, recorded a verdict
of lawful killing.
Essex Police, said: Peter Lamb underwent a rigorous selection
process and his previous experience was known to Essex Police.
He was selected for the post on merit.

But didn't he get the RFD back on appeal?
