Let us not forget another branch of the RAF, those who
flew Blenheim bombers attacking German invasion barges
and supplies in France. The planes were so outclassed
they used to fly at zero altitude over the channel and
then climb to no more than 5000 feet to drop 300lb bombs
on the enemy. This had as much effect on changing Hiltler's
mind about the invasion as the fighters who were shooting
down his planes.
The average life expectancy was 5 sorties but my one-time
colleague Ron Chatfield flew 60 missions and won the DFC
for his actions in bombing german shipping in appalling
weather conditions and navigating his squadron home.
He said that when he got back the night he won the DFC
there was thick fog and he flew so low at one point he
went through the peak of a wave and had seaweed on his
wings on landing.
