South African police fall victim to crime wave

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - A police station became the
latest target in South Africa's crime wave when robbers
held it up and made off with 370,000 South
African rand (35,000 pounds) in cash, The Star newspaper
said.

The Star said two men in balaclavas walked into a police
station in the remote Northern Cape province, held up
two officers and then made off with the cash, which was
intended for pensioners and kept in a private vehicle
parked at the station for safekeeping.

South Africa has one of the world's highest rates of
violent crime, fuelled by widespread poverty and glaring
income disparities.
