Does Neil's dad live in Devon? I know of similar occurrences in this county,
mostly subsequent to the importation of a Fireams Licencing Officer from the
Met. One of the county's best-known gundealers told me of a farmer who, after
some informal clay-shooting on farmland, found himself ambushed by the plods,
spreadeagled and interrogated humiliatingly. And a personal friend of mine
was stalked by the Devon & Cornwall chopper (five grand an hour to operate?)
while out potting bunnies - he evaded them, since his fieldcraft outstrips
that of coppers, but on returning to his car he encountered a copper with a
clipboard who advised him to inform his local plods before going shooting...
The most important thing to note is that any demands from the police that
shooters inform them before going out shooting are entirely unlawful, and you
can tell them to take a running jump - or do something physiologically
improbable. Anyone who co-operates with such unlawful requests is colluding
in the restriction of his sport, and in the destruction of his rights. Don't
be the one to allow the police to claim any sort of precedent for this. If
any police officer were so unwise as to advise me to inform my local copshop
- not that there's anyone on duty at night, much of the time - before going
shooting, I would immediately make a strongly-worded complaint to the Chief
Constable, copied to my MP and to the District Auditor, telling him to
instruct his officers to get on with their well-paid job and catch some
criminals instead of harrassing law-abiding citizens going about their lawful
business. Stroppy? You can believe it.
