Bomb sets fire to huntsman's van

A device planted under a van belonging to a Surrey huntsman exploded this
morning.

David Pitfield, 51, from Kings Cross Lane, South Nutfield, was woken up
moments after the device went off shortly before 1am to find his van in
flames.

Mr Pitfield is the amateur whip of the Old Surrey Burstow and West Kent
Hunt, which has been targeted by anti-hunt protesters over the last two
months.

Mr Pitfield said: "I rushed outside and managed to grab a fire extinguisher
and put the flames out. I was worried, I thought about the petrol tank going
off.

"It was a such a stupid thing to do. There are children next door and
obviously my wife. Innocent people could have been seriously hurt."

Surrey Police were called and the area was cordoned off as bomb disposal
officers found a number of other small incendiary devices under the car
which had not detonated. No-one has admitted responsibility for the attack.

Mr Pitfield said the explosion came a week after he received a threatening
letter saying the hunt should be disbanded.

"It said I was going to be in big trouble but it didn't say what they were
going to do. I can't believe it was something like this," he said.

Mr Pitfield also said about 40 anti-hunt campaigners had surrounded his
house at the beginning of last month.

"They will not stop me hunting, they will not stop me doing something that I
love," he added.
