That is only part of the story, before they were pulled out of the front
line to becone an officer training corps they were the most efficient
machine gunners due to private purchases and having the MD of Vickers as one
of their prewar members. They were probably the only group who knew how to
use the MG to its full potential and were used as "on the job2 instructors
in the use of the Vickers Maxim. 12000 wnet through their ranks and between
them they won 7 VC's 13 DSC and double bars, 2 DSC and triple bars and about
1000 MC's amonst their honours. They also saved the British line twice. They
were disbanded after WW1 but reformed when 300 officers dropped rank to
private so they could reform. That is where the SAS tradition of dropping
one rank on acceptance comes from.

Well, if you join the SAS you don't just drop one rank you
drop your whole rank and become a trooper.
One of my pet peeves with the military is that nowadays
no-one has a clue as to proper MG technique. To call the
LSW a machinegun is a sad joke.
Steve.
