From: nick royall, [EMAIL PROTECTED] We use the left hand side of the road because that is what the Roman armies did when they built roads, as stated, so they could engage an enemy if need be. Napoleon did force all the continentals to use the right hand side of the road for 2 reasons, firstly because he won a battle by engaging the left flank of his army which was not the normal tactic (r/h advantage to the defenders)and wished to celebrate, secondly to attempt to stop the Spanish guerillas killing the last couple of soldiers in a column and then legging it (guerilla means "little war" in Spanish) by having the r/h advantage should these rear soldiers have to turn and fight. Left handed miners used to earn sixpence a day more than r/h ones (50% more!) when mining was done by pickaxe and shovel. Nick Why me?
