This is a common problem in some rifle designs.
I had a Webley Osprey air-rifle, a side-lever job, when I was a kid. I found
out
that the safety was faulty only after I shot myself in the foot with it. The
safety
would stop the gun from firing, but when you pulled the trigger, then took
off the
safety, it was impossible to prevent the gun from discharging. I am
fortunate to
have learned the lesson that guns are dangerous at an early age, in a minor
but
painful enough manner that I remember it well, and I ALWAYS treat a gun as
loaded
unless I have made sure myself. I don't trust any safety that I can't see,
either!
