Most airgun pellets are not 100% pure lead but contain varying amounts of
'hardening agents' such as antimony and at sub 12 ft lbs leading is not a
serious problem in airgun barrels at least in my experience.
I don't personally shoot any FAC rated air rifles but friends that do so
complain not of leading of the barrel but of major distortion or even
disintegration of standard pellets when fired in very high powered air
rifles and advise the use of special heavyweight pellets made in Korea
(where such extremely high powered air riles - up to around 80ft lbs- are
made and sold). City Air Weapons of 182 Newark Road ,Lincoln, LN5 8GJ carry
one such range of pellets. As for choice of gun, it's a case of suck it
and see as usual I'm afraid. Most of the British made pre-charged
pneumatic (PCP) air rifles are available in power levels above 12 ft lbs to
holders of the appropriate FAC, as are many British and German spring piston
air rifles, but as far as I know, the Korean made Career 707 range available
from Range Right Ltd with an easily adjustable 'power wheel' and power up to
around 80 ft lbs is just about the most powerful generally available in the
UK . In the US air rifles of 9mm calibre or more, with power levels as high
as you want to take them are apparently available on special order. These
tend to be multi-pump pneumatics (imagine pumping one of those up!) with
either integral or separate pumping units and are apparently favoured by
some 'survivalist' types as they are pretty well independent of any
commercial ammunition supplies. Any of the major British PCP manufacturers
should be able to give advice on the leading question - Theoben PCP air
rifles have a particularly good reputation at all power levels but don't
come cheap- a lot depends on what calibre you prefer and what use you have
in mind for the gun.
