It would be quite simple to identify who held these guns and what they were.
However, the thought crosses my mind that the excuse "I stole it in a
burglary" is a lot less incriminating for a criminal found in possession of
such a weapon than "I bought it from Jack who know he knows I have told you
will have my legs broken". Or they could be s1. race-starting guns?

There is a seperate category for imitations and replicas. I'm
not sure what you mean by a Section 1 race-starting gun. I assume
you mean a handgun held under an exemption in the 1997 Act. I
have extrapolated from the previous years and it seems to me
no more than about 20 of those 142 stolen guns could have been
legally held (assuming all were handguns regulated under the 1968
Act), because the number of handguns held now including muzzle-loaders
at home is something like 5-10% of what it was pre-1997.
