      Guns in school prompts rethink

Police are to change gun licence procedures after a
caretaker was found to be keeping weapons at a middle school.

The man, a registered gun owner, kept his weapons at
home in the school grounds.

Last night Northumberland County Council - which said
the situation was "totally inappropriate" - said the guns
were now in secure storage.

The man has worked for the school for 13 years and
applied for a firearms certificate in 1999.

A police spokesman said: "This application for a
firearms certificate, granted in mid-1999, was known to the
board of governors and supported by a member of the board.

"This man has committed no offence, but in future we
will revise our vetting procedure to ensure Local Education
Authorities are happy before granting an application for
weapons to be kept on school premises or buildings owned by
the LEA."

A county council spokesman said: "We are pleased to
confirm the guns have been removed to secure storage away
from the school premises.

"The county council has stated that it is totally
inappropriate for the guns to be stored on school property.

"We are conducting an urgent review into our own
procedures. We welcome the police decision to review their
vetting procedures and consult the local authority. This
should avoid a similar situation arising in the future."

So the school knew all along and one member of the board
was a referee it seems! What a bunch of hypocrites.
