Steve, & Rusty,
That story above, that I've snipped the rest of, really
ticks me off, because nobody, and I mean NOBODY should ever
go investigating a disturbance without first evaluating the
circumstances -- beforehand.
That that man just 'seemed' to go out and see what was
causing his dog's irritation without much concern, appears to me
as a simple reflexive action, i.e., not thought out, not considered,
and not evaluated as to what might happen.
I'd have let the dog bark, and have darkened the rooms
at the upper levels -- if any, and done some cautious observations
of the grounds from that vantage point.
Any house worth protecting, is worth lighting as well,
on the exterior portions. One good light is worth a thousand curses
at the darkness -- and then some.
And, if one good light is worth that, then several lights
can do wonders. Criminals hate lights. Therefore, the more lights,
the merrier you will be -- within reason.
But to have gone out alone, and without knowing what
was out there, was essentially engaging in irrational behavior,
something we discuss a lot, on this list.
