January 30, 2001France to tighten gun control laws

PARIS-The French government on Tuesday announced plans to tighten
controls on gun dealers in the country, faced with an increasing wave
of armed violence. France's domestic security council (CSI) met on
Tuesday and asked the country's defence and interior ministers to draw
up new legislation forcing gun shops to seek preliminary authorisation
before opening an outlet. At present, would-be gun shop owners need only
make an official declaration, which local authorities are powerless to
oppose. The planned changes in gun laws also aim to toughen the rules
covering the purchase of guns and to
reinforce police powers. The government has also announced the
establishment of new local-level groups to fight juvenile delinquency, a
plan to coordinate the police fight against gangs and the black market,
and the recruitment of 1,000 more police officers.
--
Note that the regulations governing gun shops have already been
tightened considerably by the current French Government.
