A farmer died after falling on to a gun which fired, an inquest heard today.

Alan Bicknell, 59, was working in an outhouse on his farm at Four Roads, near
Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, when the accident happened.

Although the married father-of-two was alone at the time, Llanelli Coroners
Court heard that the most likely explanation for Mr Bicknell's death was an
accidental gun shot.

Carmarthenshire Coroner John Owen said: "The wound may well have been caused
by Mr Bicknell falling against the end of the gun and the gun having
discharged as a result of that in some way."

The court heard that Mr Bicknell suffered extensive internal injuries from
the gun shot, which entered his abdomen and travelled to his heart.

However, he survived for about 45 minutes after the shot, to the surprise of
the pathologist, in which time he managed to crawl out of the building.

A neighbour then found him and he was taken to Morriston Hospital in Swansea
by helicopter where he was declared dead the same day, on June 8, 2000.

The pathologist report concluded that Mr Bicknell died as a result of a gun
shot wound to the heart.
