A MOTHER and her two children are in hiding after a
wealthy nightclub owner was shot and injured and his
bodyguard killed.
Arthur de Sousa, 33, was found lying sprawled on a road
while Al el-Hachadi, 27, his bodyguard, was killed in
the village of Pangbourne, Berkshire, on Saturday evening.
The two were ambushed after arriving to visit a house in
the village.
Detectives are looking for a woman who had been living
in the house in Pangbourne Mews. She fled in a red Audi
with the two young children, and is believed to have been
accompanied by an adult. Last night police were
questioning a 23-year-old man who was arrested in Reading.
He was driving a blue Land Rover that police had been
looking for.
Mr de Sousa was in intensive care in Royal Berkshire
Hospital after undergoing an emergency operation to
remove bullets in his abdomen.
Local people said. that there was a row at the house
earlier on Saturday and police had been summoned. There
was speculation that the killings involved a domestic
dispute.
But police said that there was no clear motive for the
shootings. "We do not know who we are looking for," a
spokesman said. "We do not know the involvement of the
woman and children but we are happy that there is not a
kidnapping involved here." Police said the incident
clearly involved "dangerous criminals" since guns were
used.
Two of Mr de Sousa's cars, a Porsche Carrera with its
lights on and a Mercedes Benz bearing a personalised
number plate, were parked outside the L200,000 house in
Pangbourne Mews yesterday. The house was rented until
recently and then sold. Neighbours had seen little of
the occupants although toys could be seen in the upstairs
windows.
Joan Crimp, who lives opposite, said there were always
lots of people coming and going. She said: "We heard
loud bangs and thought they were fireworks being let off
by children. About ten minutes later a near neighbour
rang us in some distress saying there were police cars
and men with guns in her drive and someone lying in the
road."
Mr de Sousa lives in Tilehurst, a suburb of Reading. A
neighbour there said: "He lives behind electronic gates
and has two large guard dogs. He always has a selection
of flashy cars including Porches, BMW's and Mercedes." The
neighbour added: "His wife Simone and their young son and
daughter moved out of the house after a series of rows
between Christmas and the new year." Mr de Sousa's
father, Judice, said: "We are awaiting news from the
police."
