I also seem to remember that at Omdurman (1898) Winnie carried a Mauser C/96
in 7,63mm

Apocryphal legend has it that the 7,63 round was designed to wound, not kill,
as Prussian thinking was that a dead comrade would be left on the field whereas
a wounded one would require one or more others to take him off the field, more
to transport him, and many more to care for him whilst convalescing - all of
these tying up the enemy's resources.

I think that is a doubtful tale as pistols are not at the forefront of
battlefield planning.
