Could some one help with the following questions
In Oct 1898, a subscriber mentioned a list of home office approved
breeech loading fire arms, which could be classed as antiques, does any
one know what these calibres are.
What is the law regarding fire arms held in museums, IE public, private
& other museums, also the Pattern Room.
Regards Walter

There are provisions in the 1988 Act that were broadened by the 1997 Act
relating to the licensing of museums. Museums can hold any kind of firearm
provided they have the correct license. Private museums can have a museum
license (I think, off the top of my head) but some simply have an FAC.
I assume you meant 1998 as email was pretty basic in 1898.
The Home Office can provide you with the list of obsolete calibres and
there is an list of examples of firearms that they consider exempt under
Section 58(2). I think the number is 0207 273 2184 but I haven't tried it
since the area code changed.
The FCC recently recommended an expansion of this list.
Bear in mind this is all guidance, the law is open-ended and there have been
cases of firearms as recent as the 1930s being held to be "antiques". It
is done on a case by case basis by the courts.
Bill Harriman has extensive experience with the courts on these matters, you
can give him a call at 01244 573010 at BASC if you have a question.
Steve.
