There has been some research into heavy metal contamination of sand and soil
berms used as bullet backstops and the area of pollution is - guess what-
the area the bullets strike!! Even the rest of the berm shows very little
signs of contamination in dry conditions found in Nevada. Experiments
carried out by myself using samples from the NRA ranges at Bisley do show
migration of lead, copper, zinc and tin but less than you would find on the
Millwall FC pitch due to previous industrial activity. It is also easily
remediated by digging out the lead and treating the sand with lime dust,
cement or concrete dust or Ca-montmorillonite clay. The cost of crushed
concrete is about 45 pounds per lorry full and that is 90% due to transport
costs. Tin and zinc are not toxic but make water taste funny. Put it bluntly
the only use for "friendly" bullets would be in wet acidic land in field
fire ranges that are newly laid out.
