Dear Sirs

Ref: Prime Minister Setting A Moral Example On Firearms

Thank you for your reply to me dated 11 May 2000 saying
"We do not comment on the security arrangements for the
Prime Minister."

I'm informed by the media that the Prime Minister in fact
has about 28 men operating as armed security guards for
his personal protection.

In the light of the Labour Party's opposition to firearms
as shown by their support for the policy of refusing
ordinary citizens in the UK Personal Protection licenses to
carry pistols for their self defence, and by their banning
of pistols for sporting purposes after the Dunblane Massacre,
and by the current proposals on "firearms" by the Home Affairs
Committee, would the Prime Minister and his government be
willing to set a moral example to the people of the UK, and
of course to the whole world, by stating publicly that in his
opinion firearms are NOT necessary for personal protection in
the UK and hence he and his government will NOT be protected
by guards armed with firearms in future?

I do not believe that replying to this letter would constitute
"commenting on the security arrangements for the Prime Minister"
as they presently exist, but it is possible that people would
put a certain construction on the Prime Minister's refusing to
answer my question.

Yours sincerely"

And received this reply today:

Dear Mr Bassett

Thank you for your recent letter. There is nothing further I
can add to my previous letter to you.

Yours sincerely
Miss Emma McEwan"

Amazing what they think they can get away with, isn't it? Blair
IS setting a moral example by his behaviour in fact, but what
an example!
