Well if I can't do as much Target shooting I need to find
something to do with my Rifles before Plod steals them, I've
been wanting to take up Deer Stalking for ages now but
haven't managed to find the right excuse to get off my lazy
arse.
Does anyone know how to go about starting?
Recommendations for a course or something would be
appreciated, bearing in mind that I am an absolute beginner
and know very little about it other than the actual Firearms
aspect.
Thanks in advance.
Jonathan Laws.

A BASC deer-stalking course would be a great way to start. Drop a
line to George Wallace <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> and he will sign
you up as a member and point you in the right direction. If you
are a target shooter, your skill with a rifle and knowledge of
ballistics may well be greater than your teacher's. Just sit
quietly during these parts of the course. <g>
Once you have signed up with BASC, tell everyone and his dog that
you are looking for some deer stalking. Tell people where you
live and how far you are prepared to travel. Someone will offer
to take you as a guest, or recommend a hotel or B&B which offers
good deer stalking by the day. The going rate for guided Roe
stalking in Scotland seems to be about GBP 50 per outing plus
accommodation.
You can learn just so much from books and courses, but the best
way to learn how to hunt any wild game is with an experienced
friend or guide. He or she will teach you how to _see_ deer: when
to walk and when to sit and watch. For example, a few weeks ago I
walked up a hill which overlooks an area of clear-felled Sitka
spruce. Just after sunrise, I spied a doe. No sign of a buck.
Patience - it was warm and sunny, much too early for breakfast,
and the midges were not too bad. After an hour and a half he
appeared, as if from no-where, just as they do... Once you can
see your quarry, you have the advantage, if you know your rifle.
Rgds,
Peter.
