Noisebreakers.

They are a passive system with an injection moulded earpiece specially made
for your ear, which then has a series of baffles built into them, letting you
hear what people are saying, even whilst shooting. I bought a pair and I think they
are the best thing ever! The only fault is that now my glasses slide slightly, as
the ear cups aren't there anymore. I paid L75 for them, with the VAT, and they are
well worth it. You can vary the level of protection by tweaking the bottom of the
plug in or out of your ear slightly, and I got them a few weeks before a week at
Bisley.
It was weird, I found myself listening to something interesting behind me,
and could follow it fine. At 600 on Century, I swear I could hear the birdsong
over the sound of the rifle fire, as I let off the shot! They fit right in your ear
canal, and they are moulded from Silicone rubber, by an audio specialist. Look in
the phone book for hearing specialists. I found a local disability/wheelchair
type shop that fits them. The whole thing only takes ten minutes, then they get sent
off, and the baffles get drilled, then you pick them up a few weeks later. You can
get flesh or bright blue, and they keep the mould at the factory, so you can get
cheaper replacements if you lose them. Mind you, you will not notice wearing them
after a while, so you will be halfway back from the range, thinking the car sounds
funny, point it out to your passenger, then be told you still have them in!

I can't sing the praises of Noisebreakers enough. No batteries, and you
could wear them at a nightclub without trouble (in flesh tones!) My top tip for the
day - clean your ears really well before you go to the fitting! The audiologist
will mix the "putty" and then inject it into your ear, with a bit of foam to protect
the drum. You will then be profoundly deaf for a few minutes, til they are taken
out. A very weird experiance.

Please note that they are fine for 7.62, 5.56 and .22 rimfire, but I haven't
tried them with a high charge BP rifle yet, or shotgunning, so I don't know how
good they are for that. If you notice that it all still seems too loud, push the
bottom of the plug further into your ear canal, and everything gets much quieter.

All my own opinion, and I have yet to buy shares!
Nigel
