      Pistols man is facing prison

A GUN enthusiast faces jail after weapons and ammunition
were found at his home.

The estranged wife of ex-Merchant Navy seaman Colin
Shone alerted police to the stash, a court heard. The weapons
were in the attic at their joint home in Valley Lane, South
Shields.

Shone, 42, admitted 10 offences relating to possession
of unlicensed guns and ammunition, South Tyneside court.

      Guns included a .38 Frommer self-loading pistol, a
Browning semi-automatic shotgun and a .357 Magnum. Police
also found ammunition.

Mr Paul Urbanowicz, defending, said when Shone found
the weapons he did not know what to do as the gun amnesty was
over. He said: "He's going to give up the sport now. The
regulations are so complex.

"These proceedings have so shocked and frightened him
he's going to give up the whole thing."

Shone, a father-of-two, now of Hulton Avenue, South
Shields, was told by magistrates the 12-month maximum jail
sentence they could give him was insufficient.

Shone was sent to the Crown Court for sentence and
granted conditional bail.

A police officer friend says that when attending domestic
incidents it's amazing how many wives/partners "spill the
beans" on the errant ways of their spouse. Often they
will spout chapter and verse crimes/incidents stretching
back many years, in many instances the poor bloke had long
since forgoten he'd done it - a women's memory
can be a dangerous thing.

12 months with no finding of mens rea is insufficient???

I've seen people in the last few years be found in possession of
machineguns and gotten less time in prison than that.

I think that is a bit overboard, it's not like he was planning to
shoot someone or anything. This is getting a bit silly, I have
to say.

Steve.
