From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] It's been reported in my local rag, Beds on Sunday, that a local tory councillor is being investigated for illegal possession of a handgun. Take the story with a pinch of salt BoS is not exactly renowned for objective reporting and is very anti-gun. I have checked out the local council web site but I can't find any details of Councillor Mayhew. www.bcclgis.gov.org The article is attached below: Police to quiz Tory over handgun claim A TORY town councillor is being investigated for an alleged firearms offence. Police said they found a gun after being called to an incident involving Biggleswade councillor Paul Mayhew in the Market Square. Investigations Mr Mayhew was arrested on suspicion of actual bodily harm and taking a vehicle without consent, for which he was not charged. However, during their investigations, police have claimed they discovered that Mr Mayhew, of Shortmead Street, was in possession of a handgun. Public outrage following the Dunblane incident, in which children and their teacher were shot dead by loner Thomas Hamilton, prompted a government crackdown on firearms, and the possession of a handgun is illegal. It is not known what type of handgun was found. Some firearms offences can incur life imprisonment. The gun was taken away for examination and a file is being sent to the Crown Prosecution Service. Conservative councillor Mr Mayhew, said : "It's all sub judice at the moment, so I can't comment." A police spokesman, said: "We did attend an incident in the Market Square, and arrested a man. "Subsequently, it was found that he had possession of a handgun which was confiscated by police and he is currently on bail pending examination of that weapon. 'He has not been charged." -- Can some firearm offences incur life imprisonment? Only murder or attempted murder I thought. Sounds more like a possession with intent case to me.
