May 19 will be the annual Ride of Silence. The ride is set to start at 7
p.m so please meet in the old Starbuck's parking lot at 6:30. All
cyclists (Roadies, Mountain Bikers, Parents, Kids, Anyone on a bike) are
welcome. There is no charge.
The route will be the same as last year. We'll meet at the old
Starbuck's (at 6:30) and ride down Nash to the Courthouse. We'll take a
couple pictures there and head back up to the old Starbuck's.
This is a world wide event that honors cyclists who have died in
accidents with motor vehicles and it seeks to raise awareness of
cyclists' right to the road. Participants ride no faster than 12 mph
(strictly enforced) for no longer than an hour, and they maintain
silence as in a funeral procession.
The first Ride of Silence was held in Dallas in 2003 to remember a
well-known endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz who was hit and killed by
the mirror on a passing bus. Chris Phelan, the ride organizer, says the
movement has grown to include more than 300 rides in the U.S. and 17
other countries.
We are planning to have this ride escorted to ensure everyone's safety.
Please help spread the word about this event. We would like to see as
many as possible show up for the ride. For any questions, please contact
a member of COWs or you can reach
