welcome aboard there mike.  This is a great group.
Most of the time the group rides will accommodate
your pace.  The dedicated  helped me a lot as I am a newish
rider also.  There are several of us who ride the
ab/pks/sp/ei route often.  You are correct about the
wider paths/slower speeds/more courteous drivers
at the coast.  Wilson has many drivers who do not
understand cycling or the 'we' mentality of sharing
the road or keeping their dogs from the chase etc.
But hey, that's Wilson for ya!   Best to ride in groups
as it seems to be strength in numbers.  Good luck
