9 riders met this morning at Cracker Barrel in Durham for another epic
adventure. Well, not really epic. John and I were amongst some heavy hitters
this morning. My heart rate sores just looking at the roster. Everyone plays
friendly the first 100K and we mingle around at Goldsboro pace (18mph+/-)
keeping the peloton together with no unfriendliness. Lots of hills on the way
to Yanceyville & Hyco Lake. John and I make the first move as we get a jump on
second 100K before the rest are ready but we cruise slowly because we know
we'll be caught. Lynn (whom just rode across the country (3000 miles) in 17
days was the first to chase us down. She doesn't like to be second. We stop
in Yanceyville at mile 86 for our last mandatory stop. John is hungry and
finds a cafe for Tuna sandwich and potato salad. I grab a Little Debbie and
chase with GU. I'm keeping my eye on the lead group. I'm feeling fairly good.
They pull away and John is now more interested in the waitress. I'm riding
with Lynn, Jerry P., and capt'n Mike D. Lynn pulls away and we won't/can't
muster enough energy to keep pace. A few miles later we drop her off the
front. :) I'm no good to Jerry and Mike because I climb like a girl and get
dropped on the long climbs. Around mile 110 the others stop to top off their
water bottles but I'm packing the cameback today testing for the longer ride
coming up and keep trucking on. I ride the last 25 miles solo. Detour around
mile 115, bridge out. It ads 2.5 miles to the route. Gamble trying to cross
the bridge and maybe passing Lynn or accept the detour. I lay up my tee shot
and accept the detour. wuss! I'm feeling good and riding well except for those
loooong hills. I keep checking my mirror but no one joins me. At mile 136 I
arrive at the finish and no Lynn. I put away the bike, change clothes and wait
for others while I knock down a couple of cold cokes! She arrives 10 min.
later and claims to have missed those two big 10 foot by 4 foot detour signs
and then couldn't cross the bridge. We think she gambled. Great ride! Back
home in time for dinner and recovery drinks.
