The group split about 10 miles into the ride with like 10 or 11 riders in the lead group. So many hills I was wearing my shifter out. In randoneuring, county line sprints are a dime a dozen, State Line sprints rule! About 5 miles from the VA border I take the lead and pushed the pace. By the time I got to the border it was just me and my shadow. I tried but my shadow prevailed. In Stuart, VA the lead group is down to 8 riders. I and a few others chow down on some convenient store pizza in Danbury, NC. Mike D. being a real man grabbed pizza off the bottom shelf that was free because it was of age. Leaving Danbury and climbing out of Dan River for the 6th time my rear shifter broke into two pieces. Now I'm stuck in the 11 tooth rear cog. Ouch! I rode that way for a while because I wanted to stay up front but a 12% grade finally did me in and I slowed to a stop half way up. Luckily my cable wasn't broke so I got the tools out and pulled my cable through the rear derailleur and locked it in on a bigger cog. I was back in business on my 2 speed bike, though the 7 in front showed no pity and were gone with still 45 miles to go. I later passed two of them as they also fell off the back. Later we had our year end party at Natty Greene's Pub & Brewery in downtown Greensboro where I eased the pain with multiple recovery drinks.
