John o. and I had planned on an easier weekend following our 400K
last week by doing a new RUSA route that I had approved last week that
travels from Wilson to Clayton and back for 109K. Well Friday a 200K
ride was posted for Sunday and I emailed John to see if he was even
mildly interested. I got a call 2 hours later from Mr. O. that he had
signed us up. I’m like, hey man I was only joking!!! That’s my story
and I’m sticking to it. Both John and I rode this route from north
Raleigh to Leasburg, near Yanceyville and back last year, but I think
we both forgot that there was over 7000 vertical feet of climbing
involved over this 127 mile course. Jeez, dang, ouch!
Byron the route owner started out with us but bailed after a
couple hours. Hmmm! No one else joined us as they were smart and
continued to recover from last weekend. This route started with
hills, continued with hills, and finished with hills. Great weather
as it warmed up quickly, though a little less wind I guess was too
much to ask for. One of our favorite rest stops in Moriah is an old
country store that sits on top of a very large hill with a 360 degree
view. Getting there though is a royal pain. There are more horses,
bicycles & motorcycles visiting there than vehicles. They even have a
horse hitching post. On our return trip there at around mile 85 we’re
both like “what were we thinking”. We’re both feeling well and making
good time, but we’re also drained. Back across Lake Michie and
another big climb out the other side. %$^&#$!!! Last rest stop at
mile 110 and a nap is what I need, not 17 more miles. We did find a
$5 bill in the parking lot that paid for our refreshments and the
weather is perfect so life is good! A couple of recovery drinks and
ice cream will be even better so we roll out for the last leg. Oh it
wasn’t pretty over the last hour but we got it done. We pack up and
part for home where again my wonderful wife has prepared a feast,
including an ice cream desert. Wow, doesn’t get any better than
this!
