Be careful when riding in Wilmiongton and Wrigtsville Beach, Jim New Hanover County had the highest rate of bicycle crashes in the state compared to population and the fourth highest total number of accidents, according to a University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center report released in August. The study analyzed data between 2004 and 2008. Between those years, 240 bicycle crashes were reported in the county, according to the study. The higher accident rate could be related to the eastern part of the state's flat terrain, which makes it “conducive to cycling,” the report stated.
