I had a very interesting ride today. I drove to Columbia, NC for the 8 AM
start of a full century. The wind had started to pick up before the start
(not too bad, 13 mph with gusts). The first 30 miles were straight into
the wind with many sections of the road unprotected. Then there was the
"Peak" -- the bridge over the Intercoastal Waterway on the way to Lake
Mattamuskeet. Fifty miles around the lake with strong crosswinds off of
the lake and about 5 miles of tailwind. Back over the "Peak" to a flat
straight road back to the start. The last 13 miles were full tailwind and
were SWEET. I wish my legs had not been so sore from fighting the winds; I
barely managed 31 mph. Turns out I represented the CoWs pretty well. I
got several comments about the cool kit and I was the first to finish the
century by 30 minutes. OK, there were only 5 riders foolish enough to try
the century in the winds and one abandoned due to cramps but at least I
finished.
And then I pulled into the garage to find my wife and son heading to the
bathroom because of the local tornado warning. All in all a good but very
interesting day.
I hope everyone made it through the severe weather with no problems.

My brevet was postponed at the last minute to Sunday so I was gonna sit
today out but hard core Pete rode up my driveway this morning at 8:00am
ready to go so we cruised out to Bailey for breakfast and back for 30
miles.
Then we chilled out with a post ride recovery drink. I'm soooo glad it
was
only a short ride today.! Whew!
