You'll see this in the paper this week sometime but here's a preview...
Wilson, NC - On May 18, 2011, at 6:30 PM at the old Starbucks on Nash Street, the Ride of Silence will begin. Join cyclist from around the world and of all ages in a slow, silent procession to honor cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. The Ride of Silence is an annual event being supported by the Cyclist of Wilson (COWS), Wilson Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Board, Wilson Planning and Development Services with escorts provided by the Wilson Police Department. The Ride was first organized in 2003 by Chris Phelan. Chris organized the Ride in Dallas, Texas in honor of the endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz who was hit and killed by the mirror of a passing bus. The Ride, which is now held during National Bike Safety Month and Week, aims to raise the awareness of motorists, police and city officials that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadways. The Ride of Silence is free to anyone wishing to ride. The speed will be limited to no more than 12 mph. Cyclist will remain silent during the ride to honor those who were killed or injured cycling on the roadways. Helmets are also required. The Wilson Police Department will be providing escort during the Ride from the old Starbuck's on Nash Street down to the Court House and back. The Ride of Silence has been held in Wilson since 2008 and is one of eight registered Ride of Silence rides in North Carolina. As of March 19, 2011, there were over 135 registered events worldwide! This Saturday we'll be holding the Bike Rodeo out at the Gillette Field in the parking lot by the baseball field. The time will be from 9 until 11. I'm getting the final list together. We are needing some volunteers to help out at the different stations. Even if you have replied before, please reply to this email. This is an easy way to help out with bike safety and since the COWs are one of the hosts, it would be a good idea to show our presence there. It could be a great place to meet for an afternoon ride following the Rodeo!!! Talk to any of the COWs who helped out last year. This really was a great time and blast to see the kids going through the different stations. Kim even taught a kid how to ride while we were there!!!!! Woohoo, Kim! Please let me know as soon as possible if you can make it. Also, keep it on your calendars that we'll be holding the Ride of Silence on May 18. We'll be meeting at 6:30 at the OSB. Wilson PD will be providing the escorts.
