It was a cool start to the ride with temperatures in the mid-40s. The ride headed east from the north side of Goldsboro with the midpoint of the ride to be in Eureka. Steven and I hung with the front group hoping that Goldsboro rules were in force. This turned out to be a huge mistake. As we made the first turn, the pace immediately went to 21-22. As the pullers changed, the pace kept sliding up. The Seyboro guys usually do double pace lines and, when my turn came, I was paired with a Seyboro guy. He sees a long 2% grade an proceeds to push the pace to 27. I fall back and the rest of the group also slowed. We hung on to the front for the first 25 miles and then got more sane. By the second rest stop, we picked up a few others and limped to the end into a strong headwind. Thanks to Steven for hanging back with me. He was strong enough to leave our little group if he wanted. His mountain training with DC last weekend paid off.
