A brisk pace this morning to be sure (can you say "hammer"). Steve S, exercising sanity, drops back at Bloomery to go easy on his tires (I think I saw them smoking). Approaching Pearson's Peak, Chris B eases back to pull LR back to the group. Chris H, DC, Steve B and Lee E formed a very strong breakaway. As the leaders turn onto Simms, LR and Chris B elect to try to get Chris B back a bit sooner (and let me get my heart back in my chest). Lee E spots us and hangs back to join up. He was clearly rolling well with the breakaway. The second group continues on Hornes Church, turning right onto Old Smithfield right on Graham Brantley, left on Old Bailey, right on 97, over 95, right on Sugar Hill and left on Thompson Chapel. While we have dropped from the other group the pace to this point has been only marginally slower, still rolling 20 - 21 (explains why the chase from the breakaway could not find us). With 58/Nash in view, I casually drop "Electric Lee" and "The Bolt" off the front while still rolling 21. These two gentlemen are for real and great additions to the herd.
I finished up with a 20 avg (even with my slow down) and 22 miles. My apologies to Chris B as the route back was not that much shorter but his speed hopefully made up for the difference. Steve S, Steve B, Jeff, Chris H, Chris B and I rolled out right on time. Picked Lee E up at lake Wilson rd. The 7 of us are together as we turn on packhouse and I up the pace just a little. Packhouse is very nice with fresh pavement, but I'm not sure where the bike lane is going to be? Looks like a normal shoulder to me. Maybe they are still working? We turn right on blommery and the group seems to be holding together with everyone doing nice short pulls. About a half mile from the stop sign at hornes ch I hear that we have a few riders off the back. I keep the pace because I knew we would be taking a left on Simms and could slow down and wait. Chris H, Steve B and I turn right and slow the pace. See the group coming up blommery, but they don't take the left on Simms. So we turn around to chase them down thinking maybe they did not see us. Got to old Smithfield and did not see them in either direction. We take a left on old Smithfield so we can get back to the planned lunch box route. Left on Bullhead (very bad road by the way) and right on Simms. Both Chris and Steve have been working hard...really strong today and pull the sister like they were not even there. Coming in on airport we pass Lee heading the opposite direction so I guess they did a different route. We finished with a 21+ avg and back before 7:15 as advertized. I think it was 7:08 and we had around 26 miles since we did the little detour trying to find the others. Sorry the group slit...I'll take the blame. But I was just trying to get everyone back in time for work. :-) From: Tim & Susan <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Tuesday, May 8, 2012 8:15 PM Subject: Re: [COWs] Re: Tuesday "Century" Ride Report!
