400K (Morrisville/Uwharrie) Ride Report!
I joined 27 others in Morrisville Saturday morning for a little 250 mile
bike ride. Weather was perfect. I'm keeping tabs with the lead group but
riding a lot solo as I'm trying to take it easy on the hills. 95 miles into
the ride we leave Seagrove and cruise through the Uwharrie National Forest.
I'm like the 6th rider to leave out for the real hills. I passed up getting a
meal in Seagrove. (Bad mistake) Up Flint Hill at 15% grade. Several more
long steady climbs. 32 miles of this to the other side of Forest. At the
turn-around, 125 miles from my car, I'm beginning to get a little concerned. I
don't have my A-game and I'm fading in the ride when I usually get stronger.
I'm still only 10 to 12 mins. behind the leaders so I make a quick stop and
then it's back through the forest for round two. My calorie tank is empty and
I crawl back to Seagrove.
I take time now for a real meal but now I eat too much trying to
compensate. I also think that I'm still not completely recovered from the
virus that took me out 8 days previously. I shouldn't have even attempted this
ride as one of my doctor, riding buddies told me later. Anyway, I'm now sick,
trying to hold down what I just ate. I should have stayed put a couple hours
to let this settle down but I make another mistake and start pedaling for home.
The next 50 miles is grueling and throwing in the towel seems like the best
idea I had all day. I stopped several times to keep from losing lunch. I made
such good time going down that I had plenty of time in the bank to get this
done but I was ready to be done. I'm now in Siler City and 300K down, 100K to
go. I now link up with another friend John Morris. He is a little exhausted
from the hills and we ride out the remainder of this event together. He is
also doing the Cascades 1240K next month so we have lots to chat about as we
crawl towards home. 40 miles to go and the sun goes down making it a little
cooler and that also helps me feel a little better. We get back to Morrisville
at 12:30 am. 250 miles and 15,000 feet of climbs for the day. Can't wait to
do that again! Not! I think this actually calls for a break from my bike.
