Left this morning at 5:45 am. Checked the weather before leaving and weather
man was wrong again. Weather Channel said wind was blowing SW at 7 mph with no
gusts. Well, that must have been measured in a deep dark corner of his garage
as when I pulled onto hwy 70 it was blowing at least 15 to 20 mph. The weather
mand did get the direction correct though. Made it across the MHC bridge and
hung a right onto hwy 58 heading through atlantic beach towards emerald isle.
Man, was the wind blowing! Took Surfer Dude's advice and went all the way to
the bridge and then hung a right and headed to the Coast Guard station. Rode
all the way back to the inlet. Total ride down was 27 miles. Average speed
was 15 mph!! Cadence was only 87. Okay, so I made it through the hard part.
Time for the "fruits of my labor." Reset the bike computer as I wanted to get
a true average speed on the way back riding with the wind. Rode all the way
back to Fort Macon which also added a few extra miles. Total miles at this
point was about 52 to 53 miles. Average speed on the way back was 23.5 mph.
Cadence was 97. After leaving Fort Macon, I took a right and headed back
over the bridge. Went on over to Bridges St. Rode a few more miles and then
headed home. Total ride was 60.5 miles. Overall average was about 18.5 mph.
Longest ride to date for me. Was glad to get back to the house though. That's
the longest I've sat on the saddle. Not sure how Tim does it??? Wind was
awful but a nice test. Brought extra water with me and needed every drop.
Took in a few gels as well. Needed those. Overall, nice experience on the
bike.
