Jay was definitely the star of the ride. Most riders were astonished that he
was doing the ride on a single speed. When they found out it was really a
fixie, they could not believe it. And, since he was so far ahead, no one could
confirm it. Even several of the rest stop volunteers mentioned the guy on the
one gear bike.

Very fun day on the bike.

Some of the guys in the front group ask if I had any idea who was on that fixed
gear (Jay). I said yes I do way? They said because that dude is killing us on
that thing!!! He is very very strong!! Nice to put a face with the stories I've
heard about Jay. was doing the ride

At first sag that we stopped at I was trying to get my bottles filled. I was
empty. The cooler ran out and I had to wait for it to be refilled. I looked up
and those guys were hitting the road. Oh well, I would have loved to continue
to ride with them but no way I could chase them down. Was pulling out and Jim
was ridding up so I waited on him. As always a joy to ride with Jim.

Jim is the only rider I have ever seen that had a sheriff and the Red Cross
disaster relief truck stopped to deal with a flat. I didn't have out of my
mouth 2 min it seemed like about Bob. Then here they come flying by. Great
timing.

Was a great day to ride.

BobL, chicken farmer Birdman and Jay ( Doc's son-in-law) met at NC Wesleyan
with the the threat of rain. Nick must have stayed in retirement in spite,of a
post saying he would come if no rain. Sam the man and fast Eddie show to
represent RM. Heading out we are at back Jay riding Doc's fixed gear takes
off like a rocket, we eventually pass him adjusting his seat. I slow a little,
but Bob L says he, will catch us and he did. Jay bridges us up to,front group
with speeds of 25 plus. We catch the lead, group and I think we will sit in for
a while, but the first little rise off we go a take over the front. I last for
45 min, Steve hangs with the front group, Bob L falls off about the same time
as me. Catch up with Steve at sag stop, he has been left by front group while
trying to fill his bottle. He and I ride together rolling at a much more sane
21/22 pace. Last 12 miles are into a strong head wind and pace drops down to
18/19. All is going well until about 9 miles, from the finish, I flat, Steve
says Bob will roll by shortly and sure enough just as I get the repair done Bob
and a group of 4 roll by. Steve and I bridge up to to them and ride in pushing
the pace back up to 21. At the last stop light and a left turn I pull a Nick
and sprint through and roll in slightly ahead of the group. 62 miles 19.2 avg.
Jay is first in and wins an outback gift certificate in the door prize
drawing. No rain, cloudy but humid.
Great day to be on the bike.
Sunday a no recovery ride 2:00 DD.
Birdman.
