A group of 7 left DD at 1 PM heading out for the Whirligig metric century route in honor of the Whirligig Festival. After the requisite pre-ride review of maladies and challenges, Birdman, Chickenman, Kaiser, Doc, Dale, Lucas and Bob L headed out. The group started at a steady pace into a strong headwind. At the turn onto Lamm, the wind became a helper and pushed the group to a stronger pace. Chickenman and Dale had needs for a shorter route and peeled off just before the Whirligigs. The group continued on with strong pulls by everyone. At 581, the wind became a gusty headwind and the group struggled along at an 81 mph pace. A short stop at the store fueled Mr. Lucas with a YooHoo whose power would become obvious later. The wind and rollers on 581 encouraged the group to stop at Hardees in Bailey where we met a future CoW...maybe. The gentleman regaled the group with tales of riding in Colorado in the winter, riding Treks and Giants rescued from pawn shops and his job collecting scrap metal in his car. All the while, he appeared to be sizing up the five bikes for potential pawn shop value. He vowed to join us on a future ride. Back to the ride...Lucas took over the pull on Lyles and proceeded to up the pace into the low 20s as his YooHoo kicked in. As the gang regrouped at Lyles and 97, our future CoW buddy drove by and yelled out the window to have a good ride while pointing at us with his cigarette. Kaiser continued the high pace along 97 to Cliftonville. The group pushed hard to the finish at DD for 55 miles at a 19.5 mph average speed. As Jim says...A great day to be on the bike.
