How could buf be too small?

I guess this also means we can drop the if/else, kind of like

  system_printf ("child %d %s%s, errno %d",
                 grouped.child_pid,
                 grouped.errmsg ? "- " : "",
                 grouped.errmsg ?: "",
                 grouped.this_errno);
