Here's the problem: the newer versions of GTK+ and up have been built
with the modular, libtoolized, /usr-prefixed X11R7 in ports.  But the
distro still has the monolithic, /usr/X11R6-prefixed X11R6, so the
distro must be updated first  However, while the client side of X11R7
works beautifully, my previous attempts at the server failed.  As I
never received any feedback from cygwin-apps about the distro X11R7
transition, that never proceeded, hence the holdup.

I do intend to try the server again in the near future, so there may
still be hope.
